Keeping track of your cholesterol is important for a number of reasons. You always want to monitor how your LDL, HDL, and Triglyceride levels are at a minimum. But this isn’t always easy if you can’t, or don’t want to go to the doctor’s office.
Fortunately, today, there are a variety of home test kits available. Some of these are inexpensive and surprisingly accurate. There are also some more expensive electronic devices you can get which are more accurate. But, this is probably only necessary if you have abnormally high cholesterol levels.
One test kit I’ve used is called CholesTrak made by Accutech in Vista, California. It is FDA approved and very accurate. It only measures total cholesterol, however.
The way the test works is simple and only takes 10-15 minutes maximum. Basically, it involves pricking your finger with a small lance and putting a small drop of blood in a testing device using a litmus-like strip. Once the blood has been in the testing device for about 10 minutes, the strip turns color up to a certain point where you can read your cholesterol level.
Cholestrak is a good option to periodically use to see how your cholesterol level is. It is available at many pharmacies and health stores for $20-$25.
