nuts-pistachios-natural.jpgnuts-pistachios-natural.jpgIf you’re trying to eat a low cholesterol diet, a new study may have just found a new food for you: pistachios.  The study, done by researchers at Penn State University, showed that pistachios may lower LDL cholesterol anywhere from 9 to 12% depending on how many portions were eaten.  There was no benefit shown for HDL cholesterol.

The research was published in the Journal of Clinical Nutrition and was based on a study of 28 adults who had borderline choleterol to start with.  The researchers noted that the addition of the relatively high calories pistachios to a diet, requires a reduction in some other calories in order to prevent weight gain.

This doesn’t mean we should all go out and buy pistachio ice cream, as the research only worked with raw pistachios.  And since the study only had 28 test subjects, it’s not completely definitive.  But, eating healthy fats and omega fatty acids does help with cholesterol in general.
